“There you are!” Bessie called.

“Antonio, dear, we’re using your dryer. Rebecca was soaked to the bone,” Evelyn said, sitting down.

“Of course.”

Antonio removed Bessie’s towel and combed her hair through. He then took a deliberate cut at the back and center of her head, handing Bessie the clump of long strands.

“Oh! That much?” Bessie said, taking hold.

“Yes, we’ll do layers around your head. No more Jane Seymour hair. It’s too long for you.”

Evelyn whispered to Rebecca, “I think that you will be surprised by the transformation. He really has a knack for matching a cut to a face.”

Rebecca nodded. Bessie’s wrist was frozen in an awkward kink, memento dangling.

“Here, I’ll take that,” Rebecca said, relieving Bessie of her former locks.

“Thank you. I was getting tired.”

Rebecca coiled up the long strand in her palm to stuff in her pants pocket, but they were still in the dryer. She held them in her hand instead.

Antonio worked using two scissors and snipped her hair with both precision and speed. It reminded Rebecca of a Japanese Hibachi chef chopping vegetables.

Within a few minutes, Antonio was done. As Evelyn predicted, the transformation was dramatic.

Bessie’s blue eyes popped out of her heart-shaped face. Her straight nose widened onto an ideal tip—not too narrow, not too wide. Bessie’s soft wrinkles creased in all the right places as she beamed at her reflection.

“Is that me? My goodness! What a good job you have done,” Bessie said.

“I’m glad you like it.” He smiled back into the mirror before getting serious. Antonio bent down so his head was next to hers, still talking into the reflection, “No more barbershop!”

“No, sir. No more barbershop. I promise,” she replied.

“Put it on my account, would you?” Evelyn said to Antonio, holding up her hand to quell Rebecca’s protest.

“You look amazing, Bessie!” Evelyn said, “How do you feel?”

“Like a young girl of sixty-seven,” Bessie said, laughing.

Evelyn stood to clap. “Bravo!”

Rebecca joined in.

“Now, how about some dinner?” Evelyn said. “I’m famished.”

“That would be lovely,” Bessie replied.

“Count me in. I’ll just need my pants.”
